Principal
Andrée Rice

This week on assembly we wished Happy 100th Birthday to Sir David Attenborough! When I asked everyone had they heard of him, nearly every hand went up. Sir David’s lifetime of work as a biologist, natural historian and documentary maker reminds us all that perseverance enables extraordinary impact, that curiosity opens minds to wonder, and that a deep, enduring passion for all living things calls every one of us to act with respect and responsibility – starting with the grounds and environment at Jimmies.

The message coming from Sir David is the same as that coming from Artemis II: we are all part of the crew on planet Earth and if we do not act now to save our planet, it will be too late.

Below are some quotes to reflect upon by Sir David Attenborough:

  • “Nature is our biggest ally and greatest inspiration.”
  • “Bringing nature into the classroom can kindle a fascination and passion for the diversity of life on earth and can motivate a sense of responsibility to safeguard it.”
  • “Cherish the natural world, because you're a part of it and you depend on it."
Andrée – Sir David Attenborough

Mr Kubunameca followed my address with a call to students to sign up for our Laudato Si (Environmental) Committee so there is a concrete way at Jimmies to get involved with sustainable and environmental initiatives. Our upcoming immersion to Kiribati, an Oceania island country drastically affected by climate change and rising water sea levels is an incredible opportunity to learn more about these significant global issues. Please chat to your young people about the messages they heard this week on assembly and how they feel about such issues.

Open Day was a resounding success for us with over 70 families and 150 people coming through. The school and our facilities looked amazing! We are going to be marketing our Year 5/6 Warren St Junior School quite intensively in the coming months, so please encourage anyone you know who might be interested in applying for Junior School in 2026 to get an application in now.

Mothers’ Day afternoon tea was a real family engagement occasion and very well attended. A huge shout out to the Identity Team and Ms Lisa Kubunameca for preparing this very classy event that included fabulous and fun mingling activities. “Main character energy” was definitely present!

Last night saw a wonderful opportunity for our Rugby League Excellence girls, coaching staff and St. James teachers to come together to celebrate women's Rugby at the second State of Origin Women's match. The event is a real highlight on our Rugby League calendar and is particularly special to our school community, as we progress through the second year of our Rugby League Excellence Program.

As well as an incredibly professional and well credentialed staff, led by Rugby League Co-ordinator- Blake Henley, Girls Coach- Ana Fotu (Broncos NRLW Assistant Coach), Assistant Coach- Brandon Finnegan (Queensland Cup Player) and Coaching Staff member-Shalom Sauaso (Broncos NRLW Player & NRL Rookie of the Year 2025), we recently had six of our female Rugby League players selected for Queensland Schoolgirls: Ungatea Tuitahi, Ngatahlia Harris, Seta Lelilio-Sali, Khadeja Moa, Shyloh Tofae and Charlie-Rose Tevita.

Sport is drawing very high calibre students to St James and this is something we are very proud of and working very hard at. As our 2026 Strategic Plan says:

Neither postcode, cultural background, learning need, gender nor religion will define you or limit you at St James College. Perhaps even the impossible might happen!

This week there have been many examples of the impossible happening and we are truly blessed with the most wonderful group of students, staff and families.

A Fond Farewell to Mr Zahid Hassan

It is with heavy heart that St James farewells an important member of our community this Friday - Mr Zahid Hassan. Zahid has been a deeply valued member of the St James College community since joining us in 2019. Over the past seven years, he has given generously of his time, care and commitment to students and their learning, always placing them and their growth at the centre of his work.

Zahid has lived the College’s Touchstones with authenticity and heart. Through his commitment to a Liberating Education, he built strong relationships with students, supporting them with both knowledge and genuine care, and often giving extra time to ensure they could achieve their best. His presence has helped shape an Inclusive Community, where he formed lasting connections with colleagues and students—relationships that we value and will hold in our hearts.

In his quiet way, Zahid has embodied Justice and Solidarity, standing alongside those in our community with compassion, generosity and humility, living the Gospel Values each day, showing unconditional positive regard and a deep belief in the dignity of every person.

Zahid will be missed greatly. We thank him sincerely and wish him and his family every happiness and fulfilment in the next chapter of his journey.

Working with UQ on Critical Thinking – “Teaching for Thinking”

Since 2025, St James has been working with Dr Yael Leibovitch from the University of Queensland to implement a new Pedagogical Framework (method of teaching) called Teaching for Thinking. The program focuses on building student agency and confidence through peer collaboration and the use of critical thinking strategies.

In 2025, four of our teachers completed an Action Research project, led by Dr Leibovitch, which is soon to be published! The outcomes of this small-scale project involving four St James classes were so overwhelmingly positive, that in 2026 we are expanding these teaching and learning strategies across all classes and subjects.

This term, the College Leadership Team and Directors of Curriculum have been observing classroom teachers via “positive walkthroughs.” It has been incredibly affirming to witness our teachers creating highly engaging and thought-provoking activities with their classes. Classrooms are buzzing with students working in groups, working together to create visual maps of their thinking, challenging each other’s opinions through respectful questioning, and taking accountability for their learning.

We are using laptops less in our classes because research has consistently proven that writing is thinking; writing and reading at the same time creates a ‘map’ in our brains, increasing memory retention (Google author & researcher, Jared Cooney-Horvath for more detail). One Year 8 student proudly showed me his notebook to emphasise how much more neat his handwriting has become since he began using his notebook rather than his laptop.

Heads of Faculty are leading the implementation of our critical thinking pedagogy, working alongside and mentoring the teachers in their department. It’s an exciting stage for us at St James and I am proud and thankful to all of our teachers for their sincere efforts to increase student engagement and outcomes.

Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea

Our Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea was a warm and meaningful celebration of the women and carers who play such an important role in the lives of our students. The afternoon created space to pause, connect, and express gratitude through shared conversation, creativity, and reflection. Students took great pride in welcoming their mothers and carers, serving afternoon tea, and participating in activities alongside them - BINGO (Mother's edition) being a particular hit. It was a joyful reminder of the strength of family relationships within our College community. Thank you to all who attended and helped make the afternoon such a memorable and affirming experience.

Laudato Si’ Committee

The College has launched its Laudato Si’ Committee expressions of interest from both students and staff. The committee seeks individuals who are passionate about caring for our common home and promoting justice and sustainability across the College. Rooted in the call of Laudato Si’, the committee will look to focus on action, advocacy, and leadership rather than discussion alone. Members will work collaboratively to plan initiatives that respond to environmental and social challenges both locally and globally. Through the work, students will be empowered to develop their voice, lead change, and live out the values of responsibility and solidarity. There will also be opportunities for the community to connect and partner with the College on our sustainability journey.

Month of May – Mary

Throughout the month of May, the Church invites us to honour Mary as a model of faith, courage, and trust in God. At the College, this month provides an opportunity for prayer, reflection, and renewed attention to the values Mary embodies—humility, compassion, and service. Students and staff are encouraged to pause throughout the month to reflect on Mary’s example of saying “yes” to love, hope, and responsibility. In a multicultural and multifaith community, Mary also reminds us of the importance of gentleness, listening, and care for one another as we continue to pursue and embody our theme of Yoonthala: As One in One Place.

Interhouse Choir Competition

On Friday 1 May, our four College Houses faced off in the inaugural Interhouse Choir Competition. Each House was tasked with presenting a 3–5 minute musical performance that reflected this year’s College theme, Yoonthala (Unity).

All four Houses delivered impressive performances featuring a range of props, choreography, and costumes, while most importantly showcasing outstanding House spirit throughout the afternoon.

Congratulations to Hogan House, who claimed first place with their performance of Count on Me by Bruno Mars. With such a high standard set in the competition’s first year, we are already looking forward to seeing what each House brings in 2027.

Well done to all students and House Deans for their enthusiasm, teamwork, and wonderful efforts in making the event such a success.

A Warm Welcome: Central Asia/Middle Eastern Parents’ Dinner
Weeda Sayeed

On 30 April 2026, we had the pleasure of hosting our Central Asia/Middle Eastern Parents’ Dinner, a special event aimed at warmly welcoming our new students and encouraging their families to become actively involved in our college community. The evening was particularly meaningful as it coincided with the scheduled parent-teacher interviews, providing families with a valuable opportunity to meet teachers, build connections, and discuss their children’s academic progress in a supportive environment.

Following the interviews, guests were invited to enjoy a delicious dinner thoughtfully prepared by our dedicated staff and supportive parent community. The atmosphere throughout the evening was warm and inclusive, with families, staff, and students coming together to share a meal, engage in meaningful conversations, and celebrate the strong sense of community that defines our college.

Events like this highlight the importance of partnership between the college and families, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support for our students. It was truly heartening to see such positive engagement and enthusiasm from everyone who attended.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all the staff members who played a role in organising and supporting this wonderful evening. In particular, we would like to thank Sue Cameron, Josateki Tora, Mat Silao, Rabie Noorani, and everyone else who contributed their time and effort to make the event such a success.

We look forward to continuing to build strong relationships with our families and creating more opportunities for connection in the future.

Year 7 Chinese Excursion: A Taste of Culture
Nicole Christensen

On Tuesday, our Year 7 Chinese students embarked on an exciting excursion to a local Chinese restaurant for lunch. The outing was planned to enhance their classroom learning about Chinese cuisine and culture. Students were able to get involved in the traditional shared style of dining, where dishes are placed in the centre of the table for all to enjoy together—a practice that mirrors the way Chinese families and friends come together for a meal.

Throughout the lunch, students enthusiastically practised using chopsticks and sampled an array of delicious dishes typical in Chinese restaurants. The immersive experience truly brought their lessons to life, deepening their understanding of both the food and the customs surrounding dining in Chinese culture. The excitement was palpable, with Tyler exclaiming, “I rate this a million out of ten!” and Gabriel sharing, “This is the best chicken I’ve ever eaten!” Judging by these rave reviews, it’s clear the excursion was a resounding success and a memorable highlight for all involved.

Year 10 Outdoor Recreation Class
Darin Coombs

On Friday 8 May, the Year 10 Outdoor Recreation class embarked on an 8km hike through the Lillybrook Recreational Area at the western end of Lake Wyaralong. Despite it being the coolest day of the year so far, students thoroughly enjoyed all that the area had to offer, including the abundance of local wildlife and native flora.

Along the way, students were fortunate to meet a group of horse riders who kindly allowed them to pat their horses and answered the many questions students had about their rides and experiences. The class then continued to the summit, where students took a well-earned rest and enjoyed the stunning scenery of the western ranges before beginning the hike back to Lillybrook.

As the weather continues to cool, the class will take part in more challenging hikes to further develop their resilience and outdoor skills in preparation for their camp in Term 3.

Year 11 and 12 Drama Students Inspired by Live Theatre
Michael Harrop

The Year 11 and 12 Drama students recently attended the outstanding production of The Sapphires at Queensland Performing Arts Centre. The excursion was a fantastic opportunity for students to experience live professional theatre and witness the power of storytelling through music, drama, and performance.

Students were thoroughly engaged throughout the show and were especially impressed by the energy, humour, and emotional depth of the performances. The talented cast brought the characters to life with incredible vocals, dynamic choreography, and heartfelt acting, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.

The experience provided valuable inspiration for our Drama students as they continue developing their own performance skills in class. It was an enjoyable and memorable evening for all involved, and we thank the staff and performers for delivering such an exceptional production.

Strong Performance from our Senior Debating Team in Latest Round
Sophie Conlon

Our Senior Debating Team represented the school exceptionally well in last night’s short-preparation debate round. Students debated the thought-provoking topic of whether peaceful or violent protests are more effective in creating social and political change. In what proved to be a very close contest, the team narrowly missed out on the win after delivering a thoughtful and well-structured case against their opposition.

Our students received great feedback on the strength or their arguments and the development of their Points of Information questions (POIs). The adjudicator noted their confidence, engagement, and ability to think quickly under pressure.

Overall, the team should be extremely proud of their performance and the growth they continue to show each round. With each debate, our Seniors continue to strengthen their skills, and we are excited to see what they achieve next round.

National Reconciliation Week 2026

Krystal Beazley

Theme: All In | Dates: 27 May – 3 June (same dates annually) | Celebrating: 1 – 5 June

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) invites all Australians to pause, learn and reflect on the stories that shape our shared identity. It is a time to acknowledge our history, celebrate the richness of our cultures and consider how each of us can contribute to a future built on respect and understanding.

In education, NRW highlights the power of learning to drive meaningful change. It encourages schools and communities to explore our collective past with honesty, value the diverse voices that make up Australia and create learning environments where curiosity, empathy and inclusion thrive. It reminds us that even small actions can strengthen relationships and support a more connected future.

This year’s theme, “All In,” shared by First Nations Ambassador Amira Ahmat, calls us to show up wholeheartedly. Being “All In” means being present, listening deeply and committing to action not only when it is easy, but when it truly matters.

At St James, “All In” reflects our commitment to supporting one another, learning from the stories and cultures around us and taking responsibility for the community we are building together. Everyone has a role, everyone has a voice and everyone contributes to reconciliation in their own way. Reconciliation is not the work of a few; it is something we achieve together.

The Cultural Team will share a weekly schedule of cultural activities over the coming days for #NRW26, and a full guide of key dates and resources is available here: Key Dates of Cultural Significance (#NRW26)

Year 5/6 AFL Gala Day
Reed Mansfield

Our Year 5/6 AFL team proudly participated in the Bachar Houli Cup on Wednesday. Students competed in games consisting of 2 x 8-minute halves and demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the day. Unfortunately, due to persistent rain, the carnival finished early and we were unable to play our final two games. Despite the wet weather and showers throughout the day, our students remained enthusiastic and continued to participate with positive attitudes. A highlight of the day was our biggest win of 39–0! Congratulations to Samuel Badibe, who received an MVP award voted on by the umpires and AFL officials. Well done to all of our Year 5/6 AFL players for representing our school so proudly and displaying such positive behaviour and teamwork throughout the carnival.

Queensland All Schools State Cross Country Championships
Darin Coombs

Over the weekend, St James College student Oliver Hutchison competed at the Queensland All Schools State Cross Country Championships held at the challenging hilly course of Limestone Park in Ipswich. The event brought together the very best school cross country athletes from across Queensland to compete for state honours.

Demonstrating true Jimmies spirit, determination, and sportsmanship, Oliver produced an outstanding performance in the 17–19 Years Boys Multi-Class event. In an exciting finish, he sprinted away over the final 500 metres to claim the Queensland State Championship title and secure 1st place.

Oliver’s success did not stop there. Following his impressive performance, he has now been selected to represent both St James College and Queensland at the Australian All Schools National Cross Country Championships to be held in Ballarat on 22–23 August.

We congratulate Oliver on this incredible achievement and wish him all the very best as he competes on the national stage representing both the College and Queensland.

  • Open Boys fought hard to come away with a strong 50–44 win.
  • Open Girls delivered an outstanding performance with a 53–39 victory.

Rugby League
Blake Henley

Last Wednesday, our Year 9/10 and 1st XIII Rugby League boys took to the field at Valley’s Rugby League Grounds for a trial match against Bellbird Park State High School. It was a valuable hit-out for both teams, with the games played in great spirit, showcasing excellent sportsmanship and respect throughout the day.

St James College was fortunate to come away with victories in both matches; however, the true value of the trial was the opportunity for players and coaches to identify areas for improvement, refine tactics, and further develop planned plays ahead of upcoming competitions.

The day was a great success, and we would like to sincerely thank Bellbird Park State High School for their support, professionalism, and contribution to such a positive experience for all involved.

Titans Cup

In other Rugby League news, the Year 9/10 Boys B Team played Miami State High School in the semi-final of the Titans Cup last Wednesday. In a closely contested and hard-fought match, Miami secured a narrow 16–10 victory.

The Titans Cup has provided a fantastic learning opportunity for our boys, allowing them to grow in confidence, teamwork, and game awareness throughout the competition. Congratulations to the team on an outstanding effort in reaching the semi-finals and representing the College with pride and determination.

On Wednesday, our Year 9/10 Rugby League girls took to the field for their Round 1 Titans Cup clash against Keebra Park State High School. Despite extremely challenging conditions on a waterlogged field, the St James College girls displayed tremendous courage, determination, and resilience throughout the match. While the team unfortunately went down 30–4, the scoreline certainly did not reflect the effort and spirit shown by the girls from start to finish.

The team worked tirelessly through the middle of the field, with their defensive effort and tackling proving to be a real highlight of the game. At various stages, the girls produced some outstanding passages of play, showing skill, teamwork, and composure under pressure against a strong Keebra Park side. Their commitment to supporting one another and never giving up was evident for all to see.

Although the result did not go their way, there are many positives to take from the performance and plenty to build on as the competition progresses. The girls should be extremely proud of the way they represented St James College with sportsmanship, grit, and determination. We look forward to seeing the team continue to grow and improve as they prepare for Round 2.

St James College vs St Laurence's College ISSA Cup Junior Boys

Despite facing a tough challenge in our opening game of the ISSA Cup, our St James College team showed incredible spirit and determination on the field. We went up against the more experienced and formidable St Laurence's team, who demonstrated their skills and teamwork throughout the match. While the final score reflected a significant victory for St Laurence's, it’s important to remember that every game is a learning opportunity. Our players displayed resilience and a willingness to compete, and we are proud of their effort and sportsmanship from start to finish. This match has given us valuable lessons to build on as we continue our journey in the competition. We are motivated to train harder, improve our skills, and come back stronger in the next round. We believe in our team's potential and are excited to see how we grow and develop as a team.

Football Queensland Boys Q-League Gala Day

Students from St James College proudly represented the College at the recent Football Queensland Boys Q-League Gala Day. Both the Junior Boys and Senior Boys teams competed with determination, teamwork, and excellent sportsmanship throughout the day. Facing strong opposition, all players demonstrated resilience and a positive attitude in every match. The gala day provided students with a valuable opportunity to develop their skills, build team connections, and represent the College community with pride. All teams gave 100% effort and should be extremely proud of their performances and commitment on the day. Congratulations to all students and staff involved in a successful event.

Football Queensland Girls Q-League Gala Day

This week at Q-League our senior and junior girls football teams took to the pitch for two games each. Unfortunately, both teams struggled in their first matches with the seniors against Groves Christian College and our juniors facing Wisdom College. Despite the results, both teams decided to lift their game and show Loganlea and Woodridge State High School just how good they really are. The seniors were up first for the second fixture against Loganlea and despite struggling to put away a few chances, managed to burry one in the bottom corner in the last play of the first half thanks to Daniella S's finish. However, it was also the defensive efforts of captain, Skye D and goalkeeper Thea B that helped us see out the 1-0 win.

The juniors finished off the day with an incredible effort against Woodridge State High School. Coaches Jeremy Seng and Helya Baghaie even assert that it was some of the best football they had seen the girls play. Some highlights included the brave and tenacious goalkeeping of Asia SH and attacking ferocity of Dorcas M and Gloriane B. To name one stand out player would be an impossible task as every player performed their role perfectly but sadly for us, the goalkeeping and defensive efforts of Woodridge were strong, and the match finished with a 0-0 stalemate.

For many of the girls, the real fun began after the games as staff from Football Queensland came out to Meakin Park to run activities with prizes to celebrate Women's Football Week. As expected, our girls were eager to take part and won some fantastic Matilda's merchandise. We even had the privilege of our juniors' game against Woodridge being officiated by one of the Matilda's regular referees who officiated at this year's AFC Women's Asia Cup. Overall, it was another terrific day of football and a great opportunity to prepare for our upcoming ISSA Cup fixture against All Hallows' School next Monday.

CLC Tigers School Showdown

Our students proudly represented the school at the CLC Tigers School Showdown, competing against a number of schools in a fantastic day of sport, teamwork and school spirit. We entered four teams into the competition, with our Junior Girls, Junior Boys, Senior Girls and Senior Boys all displaying outstanding determination, sportsmanship and pride throughout the day.

The Senior Girls team had an exceptional tournament, remaining undefeated across all of their matches to be crowned champions of the Senior Girls Division. Their teamwork, communication and determination were outstanding and they represented the school with great pride both on and off the field.

The Senior Boys team also enjoyed a dominant performance, going through the entire competition undefeated and taking out the Senior Boys Division title. The team showed excellent skill, resilience and teamwork throughout the day and should be extremely proud of their efforts.

Our Junior Girls team competed strongly in a very competitive division and finished the tournament in an impressive 3rd place. The girls continued to improve throughout the day and demonstrated fantastic effort, encouragement and team spirit in every game.

The Junior Boys team also represented the school admirably, finishing 5th overall in the Junior Division. The boys displayed great enthusiasm, persistence and sportsmanship and gained valuable experience competing against strong opposition.

Congratulations to all students involved for their outstanding efforts and positive attitude throughout the event. Thank you also to the staff and supporters who assisted on the day and helped make the competition such a success. The way our students represented the school was something everyone should be proud of.

Strength and Conditioning
Lachlan Taylor

Over the Christmas school holidays, our school was fortunate to have a new gym facility built, providing students with an outstanding space to support their athletic development. The gym will be used predominantly by students in the Rugby League Excellence Program, while also supporting our Basketball, Netball and Football programs.

This new space allows students to access high-quality strength and conditioning programs designed to prepare them for the physical demands of their sport. Sessions will focus on developing key athletic qualities such as strength, power, speed, mobility, injury resilience and overall movement efficiency.

Having access to this space provides our students with a top-tier training environment and further strengthens the school’s commitment to athlete development. It is an exciting addition to our sporting programs and will play an important role in helping students train with purpose, build confidence, and continue to improve both on and off the field.
