There’s a new energy in the air on campus, and on the menu, following the opening of the new St James College canteen.

The purpose-built facility, developed in consultation with architects, kitchen designers and hospitality professionals, reflects the college’s commitment to student wellbeing, cultural inclusion and academic success. The design and layout of the kitchen had input from the college’s Canteen Manager and Chef Matt White, and fellow Chef and hospitality teacher Peter Van Lunn.

“Every detail of the space has been thoughtfully planned, and the equipment is state-of-the-art. It’s a pleasure to cook in, and it allows us to prepare high-quality, fresh meals every day,” Chef White said.

The menu, aligned with the Queensland Government’s Smart Choices program, uses a red–amber–green system to guide students towards healthier food options. With a strong focus on ‘green’ and ‘amber’ meals, the canteen offers nutritious hot dishes, salads, wraps, sushi, sandwiches and snacks made fresh each morning.

"We’ve designed the menu to give students the fuel they need to learn,” Chef White said.

“The Smart Choices guidelines are backed by research showing that a nutritious menu can improve the behaviours and brain function critical for success at school.”

Importantly, the menu also reflects the cultural diversity of the St James College student body. Meals are inspired by Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Asian, African and European cuisines sit alongside Halal-certified meals, fresh salads, and familiar offerings. Early favourites among students and staff include stir-fried beef lo mein, grilled tandoori chicken burgers, cottage pie with mash, Greek and Caesar salads, and a wide variety of wraps and sandwiches. Most lunch items are priced between $3.00 and $5.50, making healthy choices both accessible and affordable.

The canteen is open from 7:30am, with a small range of hot and cold breakfast items, such as toasted sandwiches, yoghurt and granola cups, and muffins, all available before classes start. The café is also open for barista-made coffee and hot chocolate from 7:00am to 9:00am, with service continuing across first and second breaks.

Orders can be placed in person before 9:30am or via the QKR app, with EFTPOS and cash accepted at all service points.

The new canteen adds another layer to the College’s student wellbeing focus, supporting inclusion, belonging and academic growth, one fresh meal at a time.
