Learning Beyond the Classroom at Jimmies on the Dam
Year 11 Biology students recently immersed themselves in a three-day field program at the college’s Maroon Dam campus, affectionately known as Jimmies on the Dam.
As part of their General Biology course, students practiced essential field sampling techniques and explored diverse ecosystems. Their program included visiting Mount French to study ecological succession on a volcanic plug, as well as conducting both forest and aquatic studies at Yellow Pinch Reserve and around the dam itself.
While the weather presented a few challenges, students made the most of their time outdoors, also enjoying a brief canoeing session.
Jimmies on the Dam is a true extension of classroom learning for students, it is a place where science, outdoor education, year level camps and student retreats all come to life. It remains a favourite among students and teachers, adding a rich dimension to learning experiences and connection to the natural world.
